The Alexander Technique Institute Teacher Training School opened on Sydney's North Shore in July 2002. The school is offering a competency based three year graduate training course for those wishing to become teacher of the F.M. Alexander Technique. The class size is kept small with 7-10 trainees only. Trainees receive a solid grounding in the unique teaching principles of F.M. Alexander. Trainee intake is at the commencement of each term for 2010 - January, April, July and September.
The school is fully accredited by the professional society AUSTAT, the Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique. The teacher / student ratio is 1:5. Upon graduation students are awarded a certificate that is recognised by the International Affiliated Societies including STAT (London), AmSAT (USA) and European affiliated societies.
The Teacher Training School
In 2002 Diana became a Head of Training and set up the Alexander Technique Institute Teacher Training School in North Sydney where she also conducts a private practice. Diana's teaching has been influenced by the first generation teachers. The school offers full-time, traditional training. Diana and her assistants are dedicated in 'preserving F.M. Alexander's teaching in it's authentic form.' No other disciplines, yoga exercises, N.L.P or 'accelerated learning' programs are incorporated within the teacher training curriculum.
Skilled Use of Hands
The Alexander teachers' hands-on work must be highly skilled in order to (1), balance the head, neck and back relationship (the reflex centre) of another and (2), give direction to allow the spine to lengthen and the back to widen in order to assist natural breathing. The development of this skill depends on how the Head of Training instructs his/her trainee's. Diana, demonstrates and instructs trainees individually. Communication and observational skills are cultivated so that trainee's build confidence and become competent Alexander teachers, fully able to teach and demonstrate to individual pupils how to apply Alexander's principles for fundamental, on-going change.
