The Teacher Training School
In 2002 Diana became a Director of Training and set up the Alexander Technique Institute Teacher Training School. Diana and her teaching assistants offer the traditional 1600 hours continuous and consistent training over three years. Diana is dedicated to "preserving F.M. Alexanders' teaching in it's authentic form", therefore, no other disciplines, yoga exercises, NPL or accelerated learning programs are incorporated in the teacher training curriculum. This ensures that trainees receive a solid grounding in F.M. Alexander's unique teaching principles and learn how to bridge theory with practice to become competent Alexander Teachers.
The class size is kept small with a maximum of 10 trainees which ensures each trainee received daily instruction and hands-on work from the Director of Training. The teacher/trainee ratio is keep at 1:5. Intake is at commencement of each term, February, May, July, October.
The school is fully accredited by the professional society AUSTAT, the Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique. Upon graduation students are awarded a certificate from the school and AUSTAT certificate that is recognised by the International Affiliated Societies Group that include STAT (U.K), AmSAT (USA) and European affiliated Societies.
The School does not offer or recognise part-time, 'flexi' Alexander Teacher training. This type of training is not recognised by the International Affiliated Societies or by the professional society STAT (London, UK).
Skilled Use of Hands
The Alexander teachers hands are is unique and highly skilled. With tactile and verbal instruction the teacher (1) demonstrates inhibition, (2) assists the neck to be free and (3) gives clear, gentle direction that balance the head upright on the neck which allows the back to lengthen and the torso to soften and widen, which in turn allows deep natural breathing. The development of this skill requires continuous and consistent guidance from the Head of Training and other senior teachers. Communication skills, observational skills and the ability to self-work while teaching are also cultivated so that trainees become competent and confident teachers.
